First Lady Kim Yoon-ok

First Lady Kim Yoon-ok

First Lady Kim Yoon-ok graduated from Ewha Womans University with a BA in health care education. She is the fourth first lady to graduate from that university. Kim has a great interest in children's education, welfare, culture and  arts, and has continuously supported projects in those fields.

The first lady has a strong belief that low income families, women and children should be equally given the same opportunities as others. She also thinks that children should be given a healthy self-esteem from home at an early age. Kim's four children were no exception. They remember their mother as a strict instructor and a warm caregiver.

While her husband was building up his spectacular career as CEO, lawmaker and mayor of Seoul, Kim was engaged in a variety of social activities. She has actively participated in charity work, such as assisting children from underprivileged homes or sick in hospital, as well as homeless people.

The first lady's dedication to charity work is largely due to her devout faith. She has always treated people with love and has taken responsibility for whatever work she has been engaged in. With such devotion, Kim carried on through many adversities and provided her husband with advice and encouragement whenever he was going through a difficult time.

Kim once wrote an Internet blog called "Gahoe-dong Story," in which she shared stories about her family, her work and thoughts on people. Gahoedong is the neighborhood where President Lee and First Lady Kim lived before his inauguration, and the blog proved to be very popular. Kim and Lee first met when they were introduced by her brother and they tied the knot on December 19, 1970. Lee made a unique proposal as to the wedding date. In order not to forget their anniversary because of his hectic work schedule, he suggested they marry on his birthday and Kim agreed. Thus on their 37th wedding anniversary and his 67th birthday, Lee was elected President of the Republic Korea. Kim and Lee have four grownup children: one son and three daughters.
