2018 Inter-Korean Summit Preparation Committee ｜April 20, 2018

With a week to go before the 2018 inter-Korean summit, anticipation over the event is rapidly growing worldwide. An online social media campaign started in South Korea has provided a platform for people around the world to express their wishes andhopes for the event.

Organizedby the (South) Korea Culture and Information Service (KOCIS), an affiliate under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the campaign has also helped promote awareness of the summit outside of South Korea.

The campaign was run April 5–11 by KoreaClickers, the KOCIS Facebook account (https://www.facebook.com/KoreaClickers) that provides information and news about Korea to Facebook users worldwide. Participants were asked to share their hopes for the summit, and the 838 people who participated wrote messages in 43 languages. The combined 38,241 messages that were posted received 1,207 likes and were shared 561 times.

People from regions such as North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa took part. Messages were written in a diversity of languages including Gujarati, Nepali, Tagalog,Marathi, Malayalam, Malay, Bengali, Sindhi, Urdu, Igbo, Italian, Tamil, Telugu,Persian, Hebrew and Hindi, reflecting the universal hope of people around the world for a successful summit and sustained momentum for peace.

One commenter who wrote in Indonesian said “I hope the inter-Korean summit will bring new hope to Korea and the world. I hope peace blooms in our world likeflowers in spring.”

Another commenter wrote in Arabic, “My hope is that peace and love become the shared language of North and South, and that they can sing a song of happiness andunity under the blue sky.”

And a comment written in Malayalam (India) said, “This will be an unforgettable spring on the Korean Peninsula. On April 27 at Panmunjom, a new chapter inhistory will be written.”

The comments posted during the online campaign will be used to create a sculpture tobe on display April 25–27 at the Inter-Korean Summit Press Center within the convention center KINTEX in Goyang, a northern suburb of Seoul. The work willbe installed at the lobby area in front of Halls 2 and 3.
