President Moon Jae-in on April 11 said the upcoming inter-Korean summit will herald “the beginning of a grand transformation in world history.”

“We’re about to bring forth a grand transformation in world history by taking the lead in realizing the complete denuclearization of and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula and the sustainable development of South-North Korean relations,” he said in the fifth meeting of the preparatory committee for the inter-Korean summit at Cheong Wa Dae. “We’re standing at the beginning of a long journey toward peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.”

Noting that his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was around two weeks away, President Moon said, “Preparations from now on are more important. Until the day of the meeting, our agenda and strategy should be polished and our schedules should be checked for every detail.”

He also ordered the formation of a comprehensive situation room under the committee to serve as the base for checking daily preparations by each ministry concerned. “We need a firm resolve and confidence to write a new history of peace overcoming division and confrontation. But I hope you won’t approach the situation with the excessive ambition of solving all the problems at once but with the idea of restoring the long-severed South-North relations and laying a solid stepping stone toward peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula,” he said. “We need to understand that the grand opportunity before us is also a grave challenge. We should stay alert to the last minute and make preparations prudently and earnestly.”

With the latest inter-Korean meeting to be followed by the first summit between North Korea and the U.S., President Moon said he heard that Pyeongyang and Washington have had concrete discussions about the date, venue and agenda for their summit and preparing for it with a strong will and sincere mutual cooperation.

The North Korea-U.S. summit will be significant in world history, President Moon said, and as the two sides are preparing for it resolutely, he said he expects the meeting to produce a big step toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and consequently the settlement of permanent peace. “To that end, we should make preparations in such a way that the inter-Korean summit serves as a good guide leading to the success of the North Korea-U.S. summit,” he said.

President Moon then urged his officials to pay extra attention to the correlation between the inter-Korean summit and that between the North and the U.S., saying preparations for the former should not only aim for success but also for subsequent results in the latter. He also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Security Office and other ministries concerned to closely exchange information and communicate and consult with the U.S.
