Briefing by Director of National Security Chung Eui-yong on Forthcoming Visit to Pyeongyang

Following is the full text of a briefing made today by Director of National Security Chung Eui-yong on his upcoming visit to Pyeongyang.

Fellow Koreans, I will visit Pyeongyang again tomorrow as a special envoy of President Moon Jae-in.

During the visit, the special envoys will have consultations with the North Korean side about progress in inter-Korean relations, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the settlement of peace as follows:

First, there will be discussions on a specific schedule and agenda for the inter-Korean summit, which the two sides have already agreed to hold in Pyeongyang within September.

Second, a variety of measures will also be discussed to advance inter-Korean relations through the implementation of the Panmunjeom Declaration to ensure that a concrete agreement will be reached at the September inter-Korean summit.

Third, discussions will also be made concerning ways to achieve permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula through complete denuclearization.

As the President said yesterday, the present moment is very crucial for a peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, peace on the Korean Peninsula must be pursued alongside complete denuclearization.

Keeping this in mind, my delegation will make its best efforts to live up to the people’s expectations.
I and the other envoys will fly by chartered plane on a direct route to Pyeongyang over the Yellow Sea tomorrow morning and engage in talks with North Korean officials until late afternoon.

I will brief you all on the results as soon as possible after returning to Seoul.

I ask for strong public support and encouragement for government efforts to bring a peace settlement to the Korean Peninsula.

Thank you very much.
