 Lee Myung-bak Elected 17th President of Korea
On Dec. 19, 2007, Lee Myung-bak of the Grand National Party was elected the 17th president of Korea, as voters responded to his success as a construction CEO and Seoul mayor. He will become the first businessman-turned-president to run Korea and is the first successful conservative candidate in 10 years. The president-elect has vowed to do his best to revive the Korean economy as a top priority. He is scheduled to take over from Roh Moo-hyun on February 25 for a single five-year term.
