PSY wins Best Video Award at the MTV European Music Awards
Nov 14, 2012
Korean rapper PSY received VIP treatment at the MTV European Music Awards. A special playground set similar to the one appearing in PSY’s “Gangnam Style” music video was set up for the sake of Korea’s first singer to take the international spotlight. Just like in his music video, PSY started his performance sitting in a tanning bed yelling out ”Gangnam Style.”
At the awards ceremony, PSY accepted the trophy for Best Video Award from David Hasselhoff dressed as an astronaut who also congratulated him for his smash hit “Gangnam Style.”
PSY’s popularity was recognized after the ceremony, when reporters flocked to interview him. The rising interest from Germany and Europe in the Korean singer was evident a day ahead of the ceremony too. On November 10, an official press conference was held at Frankfurt City Hall where reporters tossed questions about PSY and his hit song, without even his presence. Supermodel Heidi Klum, host of the 2012 MTV EMA said that her children are big fans of PSY and like to dance to “Gangnam Style” at home.
Bruce Gillmer, Senior Vice President of Talent and Music for MTV Networks International also said that he would be glad to invite PSY to the stage. Radio reporters from Macedonia provided evidence of PSY’s worldwide popularity, saying “Gangnam Style” has appealed to the public all throughout Europe, played on the radio every hour for two weeks.
Monster Cable Products CEO Noel Lee mentioned that PSY achieved the largest success in the global music industry within the shortest time, and the Korean music industry is developing with well-trained K-pop stars.
Having wrapped up his trip in Europe, PSY plans to set off for the U.S. to get his next hit song ready.
