Celebrate May and spring with classical music

This month will be filled with classical music and harmony as two major music festivals are on their way. The Seoul International Music Festival (SIMF) and the Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music (SSF) will be held in late May, featuring world renowned artists and promising young talents.

Leading musicians across the world including violinist/violist Yuri Bashmet, pianist Son Yeol-eum, Sejong Soloists, Curtis on Tour, and Ning Feng will come together to perform at the fourth SIMF at Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall and Seongnam Arts Center from May 14 to May 30.

The highlight of the festival will be a performance by Moskva Soloists Chamber Orchestra led by Yuri Bashmet at the Seoul Arts Center on May 29. They will perform Bach’s Piano Concerto No. 1 BWV 1052 accompanied by Son Yeol-eum, who won second prize at the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011, as well as Paganini’s Viola Concerto and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola KV. 364.

Sejong Soloists will play Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D minor with Paul Huang and Schönberg’s Die Verklärte Nacht Op. 4.

Curtis on Tour, which consists of soloists who graduated from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, will perform Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Op. 21.

The Macao Orchestra, with its growing reputation across the world, will perform Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op.6 accompanied by Chinese violinist Ning Feng, winner of the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy, in 2006. On May 17, the orchestra will perform together with Kim Kyu-yeon on Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26.

The eighth Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music will take place at Sejong Chamber Hall in the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, as well as Seoul Arts Center and Deoksugung Palace from May 14 to 26.

Under the theme of “Far From Home,” the festival will feature the works of composers and musicians who had to travel around the world for various reasons.

For 13 days, the festival will be held under 14 subthemes such as “Once Upon a Time” (May 15), “European Expats” (May 16), “Vienna Spring and American Dream” (May 18), “Palace Concert” (May 19), and “Russian Homages” (May 25).

On May 16, the works of composers including Hahn, Boccherini, Rota and Dohnanyi who all immigrated to Europe or within Europe will be featured under the theme of “European Expats” at Sejong Chamber Hall.

On May 18, the audience will be able to listen to the works of Schubert and Brahms at 4 p.m. as well as Bartok and Rachmaninov at 7:30 p.m. at Sejong Chamber Hall. A free palace concert will be held in Deoksugung in central Seoul at 6 p.m. on May 19.

The renowned Tokyo String Quartet will be putting on a farewell performance for its final season together after performing for 43 years together.
