A museum in the heart of Seoul is now competing against the sizzling summer heat with a special program that will run throughout the month of August.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, or MMCA Seoul, has been cooling off museum-goers with its special summer program, “Blow Away Summer Heat at MMCA.”

The special program abounds with a variety of events, from exhibitions and movies through to jazz and classical music performances. First, going on now are the exhibitions “Home Within Home,” which features creations by contemporary artist Suh Do-ho, and “Korean Beauty: Two Kinds of Nature,” which spotlights about 140 contemporary paintings and sculptures, all depicting the beauty of nature. The outdoor area of the museum is adorned with an array of architectural works by young artists, welcoming visitors as they mingle with the beautiful surroundings.

One of the many events that are part of this summer program is a display of artwork that brings to light the different look of numerical and mathematical figures. Starting on August 14, there will also be the interdisciplinary art project “Annyeong! Hello!” an “intermedia art” exhibition that spans art and sound, all the way through to images and performance art.

Viewers will get to experience a very un-museum-like experience, too, as the MMCA Seoul will show a series of 16 Swedish movies as part of its summer program, focusing on coming-of-age and family films. The Swedish film screenings will continue until August 24 in the MMCA movie theaters.

The lobby of the exhibition hall will resonate with music on each Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Under the title “From Contemporary to Classic,” the museum has invited musicians to perform various genres of music for museum visitors, such as jazz, blues and classical. Among the invitees are guitarist Tommy Kim and his blues band, classical guitarist Jang Dae-kun and cellist Kim Hae-eun. Also, sound tracks from movies and musicals will be performed on the guitar, too.

Throughout the program, the museum will stay open later, until 21:00 p.m., not only on Wednesdays and Tuesdays, as is normal, but also on Thursdays and Fridays. On top of that, those who purchase a daily pass for KRW 4,000 are able to enjoy the whole program and are allowed to bring a guest for free.
