Traditional Hanbok attire was showcased under the night sky, with its beauty encompassing both tradition and change, on Oct. 20 at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul.

The Hanbok fashion show was held at the Heungnyemun Gate (흥례문, 興禮門) of Gyeongbokgung Palace.

The Moonlight Hanbok Fashion Show marked the 21st national Hanbok Day. Oct. 21 has been marked as Hanbok Day since 1996 in a hope to boost the commercialization, popularity and globalization of traditional Korean attire.

Titled as “My pride, my Hanbok,” the show was composed of two parts.

In the first part, highlighting the quiet beauty of Hanbok designs, a total of 26 elegant Hanbok outfits decorated the catwalk.

Though neither fancy nor colorful, the models showed off the unique, classical silhouette of the traditional Hanbok clothes.

With a theme of “dynamic beauty,” the second part of the show was staged with a team of musical performers.

The second part featured Hanbok dresses that have been reinterpreted in a modern manner. These clothes were so modern and trendy that they could be worn as musical costumes and in everyday life as well.

First Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Na Jong-min said, “For young people dressing up in various outfits to walk the streets, Hanbok is considered to be our fashion, our beauty and our personality, as well as something new.”

“If we preserve the old beauty and continue to create new styles in a modern manner, Hanbok can be alive in our lives, and be loved as the beauty of Korea all across the world,” said the vice minister.

Ahead of the show, four local celebrities were appointed as Hanbok promotional ambassadors. The appointed figures were actress Shin Se-kyung, comedian Jang Do-yeon, model Han Hyun-min and TV personality Christian Burgos from Mexico.
