Jazz vocalist Youn Sun Nah on Nov. 28 received the honor of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture at the French Embassy in Seoul.

Back in 2009, Nah received the order's knight honor, which is a grade below that of officer. Her latest award is due to her consistent performances and contributions to culture and arts.

"Returning here today to receive this new distinction from France, the country where I studied music, found my way, began my career and was embraced by so many supporters, is yet another testimony to this rare, precious and unique relationship that binds us together. Thank you, France, my good star, for always being at my side," she said at her reception ceremony held at the French Embassy Seoul.

"This decoration rewards my journey, which is why I have such a deep appreciation for all those associated with it and those who have encouraged and inspired me over time."

The Order of Arts and Letters is divided into three grades -- commander, officer and knight – and honors those deemed to have contributed to the culture and arts of France and the world.

Founded in 1957, the honor of officer of the Order of Arts and Letters has gone to prominent luminaries such as American jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon (1986), English singer Elton John (1993) and American film director Tim Burton (2010). The Korean recipients are actress Yoon Jeong-hee (2011), film director Bong Joon-ho (2016) and Nah.
