Calling for creative ideas for Korean national music 'gugak'

The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts (NCKTPA) would like to create a bright future for Korean music together with the many people who love Korean traditional music and who are working hard to develop creative traditional music, through the 2010 Call for Creative Music Proposals for The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts.
Anyone who loves Korean traditional music is invited to participate in the call for proposals, regardless of age, academic background, career history or nationality. The creative music that is born through this process will be unveiled in concerts on a continual basis until 2012, and opinions will be shared with members of NCKTPA with the aim of promoting the development of creative music in Korea.

ㅇ Application period: May 3rd (Mon.) ~ Jun. 11th (Fri.), 2010
ㅇ Application methods:

․ In person: Applications can be dropped off between 09:00~18:00 on work days (Except for during the lunch hour 12:00~13:00)
․ By mail: Jangakgwa, NCKTPA, 2364, Nambu Ring Road, Seocho-gu, Seoul (307, Office Bldg.)
※ Mark “2010 Call for Creative Music Proposals for The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts” on the envelope. Applications must be received within the period specified.
3. Qualification: There are no restrictions in terms of age, academic background, professional background or nationality
ㅇ 1st Round: Document screening for 〈2010 Call for Creative Music Proposals for The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts〉
․ Announcement of the list of successful candidates after June 30th (Individually notified)
ㅇ 2nd Round: Evaluation of works based on Score (Mandatory) and Demo CD (Optional)
․ Closed work evaluation is conducted by evaluators including related experts based on Score (Mandatory) and Demo CD (Optional) submitted within the specified time period.
․ Winner will be announced 30 days after the conclusion of the submission of works (Individually notified)
ㅇ Schedule for submission of works
- If works are not submitted prior to the date of conclusion after the submission of the proposal, the application will be disqualified
- Schedule for the submission of works can be freely selected among ⓐ-ⓓ

5. Types and Characteristics of Invited Works
ㅇ Invitation Area

Non-Solo 4~7 instruments 8~10 minutes 1.5 million ~2 million won
Vocal Music Any 10 minutes or less 1.5 million ~2 million won
Ensemble 8 instruments or more 10 ~15 minutes 2 million ~2.5 million won
Orchestral Music / Concerto Orchestral music arrangement 15 minutes or more 2.5 million ~3 million won
(Dance music, symphony, etc.) Any 20 minutes or more 2.5 million ~3 million won
ㅇ Characteristics of work
- Creative works that have never been previously performed publicly, broadcast in any media, or released on a CD
- Priority is given to works that reflect Korean traditional musical elements, including the rhythm and melody of traditional music
- May include works in which Korean traditional music is combined with music of various genres, based on Korean sentiments
- There is no restriction on the musical instruments used, but Korean traditional musical instruments must be included.
(Various types of Korean traditional musical instruments are recommended to be used)
6. Other matters
ㅇ The judges reserve the right to select no work for performance. Unsuccessful works will be returned to the applicants.
ㅇ Copyright shall be owned jointly by NCKTPA and the composers for the purpose of the production of CDs, the publication of scores, online contents and broadcasting that can contribute to the distribution of Korean traditional creative music.
