The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will host a special “Bicycle and Green Train” event on April 16 in the city of Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province, to mark the “Week of Green Growth” from April 16 to 22.
More than 200 people, including staff of foreign embassies, students, cyclists and travel bloggers, will participate in the upcoming event, managed by the Korea Tourism Organization.
The event is designed to promote “carbon saving travel” and help save the environment by using bicycles and trains, which produce less carbon dioxide than other forms of transport.
Korail will operate a special train equipped with bicycle facilities for the event which will depart from Seoul Station at 7:30 a.m. for Sangju. During the train ride, participants can hear a special lecture on the culture and history of Sangju and the Nakdong River area by well-known Korean novelist Kim Joo-young.
The participants will then go on a 45- kilometer long bike ride to Sangju and the Nakdong River area.
Participants will also attend the official opening ceremony of the "Tour de Korea 2011" along with Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choung Byoung Gug, lawmakers and residents of North Gyeongsang Province.
Tour de Korea 2011 is an international cycling race which will take place on starting on April 15 in the city of Gumi.
The Culture Ministry expressed its hope that people will find a better understanding of “low carbon, green tourism” and enjoy traveling in a greener way through the upcoming event. The ministry also said it will expand green tourism packages involving bicycles and trains so that more tourists can experience the beauty of Korea.
