Indie Gugak concert series brings together young performers and fresh ideas

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is hosting the “2011 Myriade Wave Concert” (also known as the Cheonchamanbyeol Concert), a series of experimental gugak concerts that blend traditional Korean music with new styles, from July 25 to October 4.

Performances will be held daily from Monday through Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bukchon Changwoo Theater in Seoul, except Wednesdays.

Because of limited demand and funding, young traditional musicians used to have difficulty putting on concerts and displaying their skills to the public, so the ministry started the concert series in 2008. Over the past three years, 52 ensembles and 280 musicians have performed in the experimental indie gugak series.

This year’s performers will have several chances to perform solo and be evaluated by professionals. After a final screening, the ministry will reward winning ensembles and performers with the chance to record an album.

Bebeing, a winning ensemble from 2009, participated in the opening ceremony of the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Denmark last year.

The venue is near Changdeok Palace. For more information, please visit (Korean)
