Korean designers join New York Fashion Week

Korea’s leading fashion designers brought their unique artistic visions to The Stage at Lincoln Center in New York on February 10 for Concept Korea FW 12.

Organized by the Korea Creative Content Agency and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to promote recognition of Korean designers in overseas fashion markets, the Concept Korea project has been an official fixture of the New York Fashion Week since February 2010.

Lie Sang Bong, DOHO, Son Jung Wan, Lee Juyoung, and Steve J & Yoni P were the five designer teams selected to participate in this season’s event. They showcased their designs for fall/winter 2012 in a joint show that also featured K-pop and gukak performances, sumukhwa (Korean ink wash painting) artwork, and various videos.

As part of this season’s event, the designers have also opened up local showrooms to display their works until June. The number of showrooms has expanded from last year to give ample space to each team, and the duration of the displays has been extended to give more people the opportunity to interact with Korean fashion.

‘“Last season we saw the actualization of Korean fashion’s entry into the New York market,” said Lie Sang Bong, who participated in Concept Korea for the third time this season. “This year, we have devoted ourselves to showing the world our creativity and potential, with a sumukhwa theme that brings together the distinct elements of Korean style and the Korean spirit.”
