Gamcheon Culture Village in Busan is a major tourist attraction in Korea that started as a shelter built by refugees during the Korean War (1950-53).

For years, this hillside village remained one of Busan's poorest neighborhoods. Then everything changed for Gamcheon after the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism came up with the project titled "Dreaming of Machu Picchu in Busan" to transform the village into a creative and artistic place. More art gradually started decorating the little streets, houses and stairs and this led to more visitors.

Today, more than two million tourists visit the village every year. Gamcheon comprises houses built in staircase fashion on the foothills of a coastal mountain. Many alleys cutting through this community are vibrantly decorated with murals and sculptures created by residents.

This video shows the history behind the steep hills, twisting alleys and pastel-colored houses.
