Culture minister urges more Korea-Japan exchanges

Choung Byoung-gug, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, hosted a meeting with members of the Korea-Japan Cultural Exchange Council on March 10, at the Korea House. The gathering was to discuss ways to further stimulate bilateral cultural exchanges and the future outlook for mutual development.

During the gathering, attended by 22 national experts and arts professionals, Minister Choung stressed the importance of private sector contributions to reinvigorating bilateral exchanges and building a more future-oriented partnership. He urged participants to play the role of stepping-stone between the public and private sector through gathering professional feedback and proposing policies that bring the will of artistic community into practice.

The Korea-Japan/Japan-Korea Cultural Exchange Council conference was held to boost cultural exchanges between the two nations. The conference started on March 10 with a plenary session on the expansion of cultural interchange in the realm of sports, performing arts, literature and animation. The next day, members of the Council participated in an international symposium on “New waves of Korea-Japan cultural interchange.”

The symposium was followed by a viewing of Korea-Japan collaborative film productions and a performance by Japanese pianist and composer Yuhki Kuramoto and Korean jazz musician Nam Koong Yeon.

The Korea-Japan Cultural Exchange Council was set up in 1999, as a result of the Korea-Japan Summit. The Council is composed of 22 culture representatives, with 11 members from each nation. Since its establishment, the two countries’ representatives have promoted cultural exchange and cooperation and co-hosted seminars and forums for policy development.
