A naming ceremony for two ships ordered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is held at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyards in Ulsan, Korea, on Jan. 17. The two LPG carriers were named the Africa Gas and the Sahara Gas.
Major Nigerian media outlets, such as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), a government-owned broadcaster, and Leadership, a national daily, have covered the naming ceremony held recently for two 3,800-ton LPG tanker ships that were built by a Korean company.
Officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the owner of the two ships, including Maikanti Baru, group managing director at the NNPC, and representatives from the Hyundai Mipo Dockyards, the manufacturer, attended the ceremony, held at the company's dockyards in Ulsan, Korea, on Jan. 17. The two ships were named the Africa Gas and the Sahara Gas.
The two new LPG carriers will be used to export Nigerian gas to other regions of Africa, along with six LNG carriers built by Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries last year. The six LNG carriers displace around 175,000 cubic meters each and in total are worth around USD 1.7 billion.
“Nigeria, the nation with the ninth largest gas reserves and the 11th largest oil deposits, is expected to generate more large-scale business projects related to the production and transportation of energy, thanks to the restoration of the international oil price,” said Noh Kyu-duk, the Korean ambassador in Nigeria. “Korea and Nigeria will further cooperate on shipbuilding and on the energy sector,” he said.
