The Korean government announced on Sept. 28 that it plans to provide USD 1 million in humanitarian aid to the victims of recent earthquakes in Mexico.

Mexico was struck by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Sept. 19, leaving some 1,100 people dead or injured, with dozens of collapsed buildings and over 14,000 homes damaged or destroyed. Mexico City was struck hardest, killing over 199 people.

Through a statement, the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it "hopes the assistance will help the Mexican people, who have suffered from consecutive natural disasters, including a magnitude 8.2 earthquake that hit Mexico on Sept. 7, directly followed by the devastation of Hurricane Katia."

Prior to the decision, President Moon Jae-in offered his condolences to the Mexican victims and families affected by the recent earthquakes in his keynote speech before the 72nd U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 21.
