Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon met with his Greek counterpart, Alexis Tsipras, in Athens on Oct. 23 to talk about joint efforts to make next year’s PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as successful as possible.

Visiting Athens to attend the lighting ceremony for the Olympic torch, Prime Minister Lee said, “Greece is the birthplace of human civilization and a thankworthy country that has sent a message of peace and democracy to humanity all around the world.”

It’s fortunate that by hosting its second Olympic Games, after the Seoul 1988 Olympics, Korea will be able to appeal to the world as a nation that is peaceful," the prime minister said.

“The Korean government will prepare for the upcoming sporting festival with the greatest care, so that leaders and visitors, as well as Olympians from all around the world, will be able to enjoy the games in a comfortable manner.”

In response, the Greek prime minister said, “The PyeongChang Winter Games will hopefully be a successful festival that the world can enjoy, just as were the Seoul 1988 Summer Games, which contributed to peace on the Korean Peninsula and to the world as a whole.”
