President Moon Jae-in met with Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong, who is on a visit to Korea to attend the Closing Ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, at Cheong Wa Dae on Feb. 26. The two leaders discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
“Recently, North Korea has demonstrated a proactive manner toward conversation between North Korea and the U.S., and the U.S. also talked about the necessity of communication,” said the president. He requested China’s continual support to bring the North Korea-U.S. conversation forward.
The vice premier highly praised President Moon’s efforts. She said, “China is pleased for the improved atmosphere on the Korean Peninsula. Let us work together to persuade North Korea and the U.S. to hold talks.”
President Moon also mentioned the headquarters of the Korean Independence Army, which is under restoration in Chongqing, China, and asked for cooperation to help finish the construction on time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government in Exile in Shanghai in 2019.
Liu said that she will provide active support, saying that “The Chinese government also considers this to be important.”
