Cheong Wa Dae on Aug. 22 decided not to extend the General Security of Military Information Agreement, a military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan.
Kim You-geun, deputy director of Cheong Wa Dae's national security office, announced in a briefing the decision reached by the National Security Council's standing committee to end the accord.
"The government decided to terminate the agreement with Japan on exchanging classified military information," he said.
"We will notify Tokyo of this decision through diplomatic means by the deadline as stipulated by the agreement."
