Global environmental issues, such as climate change and deforestation, have emerged as new challenges to people throughout the world. In the face of such challenges, President Lee Myung-bak announced in 2008 "Low Carbon, Green Growth" as Korea's new vision for national development. Korea aims to become a low-carbon society through green growth achieved via green technologies and green industries which enhance eco-efficiency while minimizing adverse environmental impacts. The Republic of Korea will also constructively contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

Sejong to become model eco-friendly city

The new city of Sejong in South Chungcheong Province is widely expected to emerge as a national model for a high-tech and eco-friendly city, with major enterprises signing on to make whopping investments into green businesses there.

The quality of air in Seoul hits its best level since compiling data in 2001! The amount of particulate matter recorded at the end of November last year was 52 micrograms per cubic meter, reaching its lowest level since Seoul City began compiling the data in 1995. Korean President Lee Myung-bak recently wrote a contribution to a world-renowned Asian journal, and in his article emphasized a change of thinking in pursuing environment-friendly development.
In the latest volume of Global Asia (Volume 4, Number 4), the East Asia Foundation¡¯s quarterly, President Lee said that green growth entails a new social paradigm shift away from the business assumptions and lifestyles of the industrial age.

Korea to construct green city in Tangshan, China

| Korean city developers are all set to build a high-tech eco-city in China. Hanyang University¡¯s Ubiquitous Green Growth Program announced that it has agreed to build an ecological city in Tangshan in Hebei Province, and has launched a feasibility study. The following is a press release dated Jan. 22.The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs announced that it will amend Standards for Development of Sustainable New Towns to develop low carbon green cities.
