Jeju Island to have foreigners-only clinic centers
 Date: June 03, 2008
The representatives of hospitals in Jejudo Island at appointment ceremony on Monday (Jun. 2).The six medical centers in Jejudo Island won a permit to open the island's first foreigner-only clinic centers for the convenience of foreign residents and tourists there on Monday (Jun. 2).

A total of four general hospitals; Cheju National University Hospital, Cheju Halla General Hospital, Seogwipo Medical Center, Hanmaeum General Hospital and two dentists: Boston Dental Clinic (064-725-9775) and Yein Dentist (064-711-2842) were designated as clinics for foreigners according to the law of the special self-governing province of Jejudo.

The hospitals would provide a one-stop service in which foreign residents will have separating rooms for waiting, diagnosis and treatment for their convenience. Interpreting services will be available in English, Chinese and Japanese.

¡°We are also planning to receive applications from hospitals of oriental medicine and other sectors as well,¡± an official at the Jejudo health office said. ¡°To operate a clinic center specialized for foreigners is to heighten the competitiveness of the local medical industry, which is one of the core industries of Jeju International Free City,¡± Kim Tae-hwan, governor of Jejudo said. ¡°Let the hospitals take the lead in providing high quality service to the tourists, whose number amount to 500,000 per year.¡±

Jejudo Island is the most popular resort island in Korea, frequented not only by locals but those from neighboring nations of China, Japan and Southeast Asian nations. Last year its volcanic island and lava tubes were inscribed as World Natural Heritage sites by UNESCO at the 31st World Heritage Convention in New Zealand.

For detailed information please call the Health Office of Jejudo at 064-710-2921.

I can tell you from experience only days ago that Halla General Hospital is not ready to welcome those who need English services. I was there dyas ago and could not get anyone to help me because I speak English. There are not even any signs in English to give directions to particular departments. However, there is a clinic for foreigners on the third floor I am told but no one would know because it is not advertised anywhere. Misleading article. Edit  Delete
