After successfully finishing its month-long test drive, a special train service linking Korea's one and only dolmen museum and historic dolmen sites in Gochang, Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla Province) begins its special tour program. A dolmen is a prehistoric monolithic gravesite, involving massive rocks placed on top of each other, often as if making a giant table.
According to Gochang-gun office, the dolmen tour train named "Moromoro" began operation on April 2, 2009. Tickets for the train cost 500 won for children, 700 won for teenagers and 1,000 won for adults.
During the test-run period in March this year, Gochang-gun office said it received favorable responses from more than 8,000 visitors who have used the train.
The train begins running at 10:30 a.m. and runs six times a day, linking the dolmen museum to dolmen sites in Gochang.
The dolmens in Gochang were designated a piece of World Cultural Heritage in 2000, along with two other sites in Korea namely, Ganghwa and Hwasun.
Gochang dolmens, the largest and most diverse, are located at altitudes of 15 to 50 meters, weighing anywhere from 10 up to 300 tons. A total of 447 dolmens of various types have been recorded in Gochang alone.
