Wonju Tattoo, the greatest military music festival in Asia, is co-organized by Wonju-si and the Ministry of National Defense and is held every autumn. The festival is full of splendid international tattoo bands, brass bands together with a diverse fringe festival. This year, in particular, visitors can see an integrated band performance of each country. Military music bands from 13 countries including Korea, US, Russia, Taiwan, France, Singapore, New Zealand and Spain will participate in this year’s festival.
The festival will be held in Wonju Tattoo Plaza (with a seating capacity of 5,000), which opens in July, 2006. In the past, Tattoo was the drum sound in order to control the military power and since then, it’s been used for roll call or a military ritual. However, today, it refers to a splendid festival that includes music, songs, dance, and comedy as part of an act to a military ritual or a play.
