Events at KCCs abroad

From June 19 to 21, 2025, the Korean Film Festival returned to Kino Světozor in Prague, welcoming hundreds of film lovers and Korean culture enthusiasts. Organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the festival once again served as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange between Korea and the Czech Republic.

This year’s edition spotlighted director Hwang Dong-hyuk, internationally recognized for the phenomenon Squid Game, through a curated retrospective of his earlier works—Miss Granny, Silenced, and The Fortress. The lineup also featured the gripping 2024 drama Firefighters by director Kwak Kyung-taek, based on a true story of courage and sacrifice. Together, the films offered audiences a rich cinematic experience spanning comedy, historical drama, and social realism.

Czech and English subtitles were provided for all films, making them accessible to a broad audience. Three of the four screenings were completely sold out, and the festival achieved an impressive average seat occupancy rate of 97.7%.

Post-event survey results reflected overwhelming audience satisfaction. Of the 264 respondents, 100% reported being satisfied, with nearly 88.7% describing their experience as “very satisfying.” The average satisfaction rating reached 97.8 out of 100. Many attendees remarked that the festival gave them a deeper understanding of Korean society and expressed strong interest in future Korean film events.

The Korean Film Festival has quickly grown into a beloved cultural fixture in Prague, now held annually on the third weekend of June. As Korean cinema continues to earn critical and popular acclaim on the global stage— from Cannes to the Academy Awards—its impact is increasingly felt across Europe.

A representative from the Embassy commented, “We are deeply encouraged by the enthusiastic reception from Czech audiences. With each edition, this festival becomes more than a series of screenings—it becomes a place of connection. We will continue to explore new ways to bring Korean stories to Prague and strengthen the cultural bond between our countries.”
