President Moon Jae-in held a summit with North Korea’s Chairman of State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un at the Workers' Party of Korea offices in Pyeongyang on Sept. 18.

“I can feel the weight we bear, that which we will have to bear, and I feel a heavy responsibility,” said the president in his opening statement. “The whole world is watching us and it would be great if we would be able to show the world the fruits of peace and prosperity.”

The first summit of the president’s visit to the North’s capital, from Sept. 18 to 20, began at 3:45 p.m. and lasted two hours.

Chief of the National Security Office Chung Eui-yong and National Intelligence Service (NIS) chief Suh Hoon from the South attended the summit. From the North, there were Kim Yong Chol, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, and Kim Yo Jong, first vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.

"Thanks to President Moon’s unsparing efforts, there were improvements in inter-Korean and North Korea-U.S. relations," said Chairman Kim before the summit. “It was President Moon who planted the seeds for the historic North Korea-U.S. summit.”

“It is no exaggeration to give credit for the historic summit between Pyeongyang and Washington to President Moon,” said the chairman. "It led to a more stable situation for the neighboring region and we are expecting more progress."

Prior to the summit, President Moon Jae-in wrote, “Peace and prosperity, the one spirit of the people!” in the guest log at the summit venue.

The two leaders will hold another summit in the morning of Sept. 19.
