First lady Kim Jung-sook visited the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace, an educational facility for young students in North Korea’s capital on Sept. 19, the second day of the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit Pyeongyang. She watched a show prepared by the students there.

The facility is an after-school academy that has trained many talented artists and athletes.

The first lady was escorted by the president of the institution, Ryom Yun Hak. He provided her with the history and scale of the academy.

“Here, students come after school for their afternoon activities,” said Ryom. "There is a total of 5,000 students getting art, sports and science educations here."

“In South Korea, many parents are engaged in joint bread-winning so there is a big interest in after-school education,” said the first lady.

She toured the facilities for dance, music and swimming and communicated with the students there.

After her tour, she watched the performances prepared by the children. She was accompanied by a business delegation including the vice chairman of the Samsung Group Lee Jae-yong, LG Group Chairman Koo Gwang-Mo, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and soccer legend Cha Bum-kun.

North Korea’s first lady Ri Sol Ju did not join the event.

Kim thanked the president and said, "I especially appreciate that I could come with the presidential entourage and watch this performance with more people.”

The first lady and her company joined the luncheon at Okryugwan, a famous restaurant in Pyeongyang, after the show.
