Day Two Afternoon Schedule in Pyeongyang
The following is a briefing given this afternoon by Yoon Young-chan, Senior Secretary to the President for Public Communication.
President Moon Jae-in and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un announced the Pyeongyang Joint Declaration of September 2018 today. In broad terms, this Declaration covers the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, improvement in inter-Korean relations, and military-related agreements to ease military tension.
Through this Declaration, I believe the two leaders have declared a practical end to the Korean War, going beyond the Armistice, which was signed in 1953 and has lasted until now over the past 65 years. And building on the peace established through this, they have outlined concrete implementation measures toward common prosperity.
With regard to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the North has now initiated a series of practical measures to disable its nuclear capabilities by announcing its intention to dismantle the Yeongbyeon nuclear facility. When it comes to the alleviation of military tension, measures have been put forth to institutionalize non-aggression in practical terms. Concerning inter-Korean relations, a milestone has been laid for the two Koreas to move toward common prosperity based on peace.
Put simply, I believe that these are practical measures to help bring the period of war to an end and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.
I will now update you on the evening schedule: The President will address 150,000 North Koreans at the mass gymnastics performance in May Day Stadium. It will be a one- or two-minute speech and will be broadcast live.
In addition, it has been confirmed that, when the two leaders had a second round of the summit this morning, Suh Hoon, Director of National Intelligence Service, from the South Korean side and Kim Yong Chol, Vice-chairman of the Party Central Committee, from the North attended the summit.
Kim Eui-kyeom, Presidential Spokesperson, has announced President Moon will visit Baekdusan Mountain tomorrow. The detailed schedule of the visit to the mountain is still being discussed with the North. When he goes, the President will first move to Samjiyon Airport tomorrow, and his schedule will end at the mountain. The President and the delegation will return to Seoul from there.
