Heading to Pyeongchang to see the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games? Then don’t miss your chance to explore the food there. Gangwon-do Province is famous for many dishes, mostly buckwheat based and potato based.
So what should you eat when you are there?
1. Memil jeonbyeong
Memil jeongbyeong or buckwheat pancakes are the kind of savory pancakes that feel light and simple when you eat them. Usually, restaurants will fill them with fried chilli kimchi and roll them and then cut them into pieces. I think what makes this dish special is the unique combination between the soothing effect you get from the buckwheat pancake and the spicy flavor you get from the kimchi filling.

2. Chodang Sundubu
Chodang Village is known for making tofu. It’s a business that has lasted for ages, from one generation to another. You can see first-hand the cooking yourself in the restaurants.
The dish itself is made in a boiling hot pan and can be made to suit vegetarians, but locals like to add some octopus to the dish, which is interesting.

This dish can be a bit of controversy because it actually depends on what your general preferences are and what you’re used to eating. However, you should know that the texture of the tofu itself is so soft that it breaks easily in your mouth, and that was something that I’m not used to. However, my Indonesian friend said that this was her favorite for its soft texture and warm feeling.
3. Beef
Premium beef is what you shouldn’t miss eating. The quality and taste of this Korean beef is in no doubt the best. From the first bite you will get to know that this is the softest meat you will probably eat. The meat itself is tender and juicy, but what I liked the most about it was how it was simply marinated so you could enjoy the taste along with the meat quality.

4. Naengmyeon cold noodles
The reason you should try naengmyeon at Pyeongchang is because it’s a cold noodle dish in which the noodles themselves are made of buckwheat flour and potato starch. Since those two ingredients are a specialty in Pyeongchang, it makes sense to find this dish on the list. The dish kind of left me confused because the noodles come in a chilled cold broth and it’s a winter dish. Nonetheless, I can’t argue about the taste and in my opinion what makes this dish special is how the noodles are cut very thin and yet the noodlesare very chewy. You should definitely give it a try to see what I’m talking about.

You can add to the list some of the dishes that were chosen by the locals, such as jjinppang (찐빵), millet pancake (수수부꾸미) and gamja ongsimi (감자옹심이).
These are the top dishes you must try in Pyeongchang. How many of these foods have you tried , or which ones do you want to try the most?
