The Dream of a King

"The Dream of a King," an exhibition held in 2017 from Sept. 19 to Nov. 26, will be shown online at the homepage of the National Museum of Korea. On display will be about 130 Baroque artifacts from Germany's Dresden State Art Collections, which co-hosted the 2017 event with the museum.

The Baroque period in Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries saw the advancement of art centered on churches and palaces. Baroque art is characterized by depictions of dynamic movement, extravagance and grandeur, and its main stage shifted from churches to palaces after absolute monarchs like Louis XIV of France came to power in the latter half of the 17th century.

Baroque art in Germany started to develop from the 18th century, with the Zwinger, a palatial complex in Dresden, epitomizing this genre. This online exhibition focuses on how Baroque court culture bloomed in Dresden under Augustus II the Strong (1670-1733) by displaying his fancy art collections.
