The National Museum of Korea is holding an exhibition of "The Subtle Charms of White Slip Brushing and Coating" at the traditional stoneware buncheong and white porcelain section of the Sculpture and Crafts Gallery, which is located on the third floor of the museum's Permanent Exhibition Hall.
This event showcases "brushing and coating with white slip," one of a range of methods for decorating pottery in the Joseon Dynasty.
The charm of a white slip-brushed buncheong ware is shown through the marks left by rough and seemingly nonchalant brushstrokes, but a buncheong celadon dipped into the slip captures the moment when the wet clay froze while dripping down the porcelain's surface.
The artisanal techniques of the early Joseon era featuring spontaneous brushstrokes, rough yet simple traces of white slip, freedom without roughness and fortuitous flows of colorless clay still appeal to the sensibilities of people today.
