The beautiful town of Yangyang in Gangwon-do Province hosts a festival each year to celebrate the wondrousness of its local
songi pine mushroom, an eco-friendly delicacy harvested from the surrounding fragrant pine forests.
The festival begins with a traditional ceremonial ritual for the mountain spirits, praying for the safety of all festival goers.
During the festival, you'll be able to collect wild
songi pine mushrooms and shitake mushrooms from the surrounding hills. A two-hour special pine mushroom harvesting program for non-Korean tourists will be held twice a day, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Also, you can try making your own
tteok rice cake in a traditional manner or dye some cloth using traditional natural colorings.
Local restaurants will be at the venue to serve up some delicious
ramyeon instant noodles, loaves of bread, buckwheat noodles and burgers, all made using locally-grown
songi.
Finally, you'll also be able to buy some local farm produce, like
songi mushrooms, shitake mushroom, honey and ginseng.
See you there!
