Moseulpo Port, the southernmost region of Jeju Island, hosts an annual festival every November to celebrate its seasonal delicacy, the
bangeo yellowtail fish (방어). This chewy and tender fish heads to the southern reaches of the island to feed on
jaridom whitesaddled reeffish (자리돔), which are seasonally abundant in this region.
Bangeo yellowtail fish can be enjoyed raw, grilled or stewed.
At the festival, visitors will be able to catch a fish with their bare hands, or catch one from a fish tank with a rod, or try fishing from a boat. Some unique experiences include making a
taewak buoy (태왁), as used by the
haenyeo female divers (해녀), cracking open one of Jeju’s delicious
bomal conches (보말), and an on-deck seafood auction will be held, too.
Moseulpo Port is mostly famous for its wide range of delicious sea food, including anchovies, hairtails, conches and abalones, as well as locally-grown pork and beef.
Enjoy!
