Over the past 40 years, the Samcheok Jeongweol Daeboreum (Full Moon) Festival has been Korea's leading festival for Daeboreum, or the day with the year’s first full moon.
The Samcheok tug-of-war, the festival’s main event, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage in December 2015. Also featured are traditional games wishing for lasting abundance and peace such as
mangwol nori, or the custom of swinging a burning coal around in a tin can attached to a chain, and
daljip taewoogi, or the burning of a small wooden "moon" house in a big bonfire to wish for luck and ward off evil spirits.
