The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. (KCCDC) proudly announces K-Art at Home: Tae Eun Kim, the final virtual exhibition of the 2020 Korean Media Art Series, featuring the futurist multimedia works of Korean artist Tae Eun Kim, whose vividly imagined cityscapes incorporate themes of politics, society, science, and history.

Set to release December 4 on KCCDC social media video platforms, K-Art at Home: Tae Eun Kim will feature ten of the artist's multimedia works comprising the Wrong Planet Landscape collection, plus a recorded talk by the artist offering an inside look at his creative themes, processes, and inspirations.

Kim employs a variety of digital techniques in his art, including 2D photo collage, 3D animation, rendered graphics, stop motion animation, and drawing. With Wrong Planet Landscape, Kim reimagines a modern city such as Seoul, evolving familiar landscapes in such a way as to seem vaguely familiar yet otherworldly.

In an abstract sense, Kim strives to visualize a science-driven society through his artwork, whether it be a planned socialist utopia or an American-style capitalist model of ubiquitous consumer technology—two different philosophies which have both historically had an influence on Korean society. His work presents an intrinsic question about the difference between what is seen and what actually exists in such cityscapes, where ideals and reality often diverge. Kim also helps visualize this imaginary space by combining objects and iconography with fictional images. His work skirts the boundary between real and unreal, between reality and fiction, allowing audiences to experience a new world of possibilities amid the gaps.

The 2020 Korean Media Art Series allows the public to experience cutting-edge digital art during a time of limited in-person events, highlighting a diversity of works by accomplished Korean multimedia artists.

K-Art at Home: Tae Eun Kim releases on December 4 at 6:00 p.m. with video content on the KCCDC YouTube channel (@Koreaculturedc) and on IGTV(@Koreaculturedc). For complete exhibition information and content links, see the listing on the KCCDC website at http://washingtondc.korean-culture.org.
