The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. (KCCDC) proudly announces its first virtual exhibition of 2021, K-Art at Home: HyeGyung Kim, featuring the rich convergence of traditional beauty and contemporary technology in the immersive media works of Korean artist HyeGyung Kim.
Set to release February 5 on KCCDC social media video platforms, K-Art at Home: HyeGyung Kim will feature three of the artist's dynamic media works created during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a recorded talk by the artist offering an inside look at her creative themes, processes, and inspirations.
Kim focuses on recreating traditional visual motifs of exquisite beauty found in Korean culture into a new form of media art that embraces the aesthetics of contemporary composition and digital technology. Traditional craft objects such as refined porcelain and antique wooden furniture become modern digital canvases for projection mapping, while Kim's interactive media art integrates light, sound, animation, and landscape paintings in motion-sensing digital façades.
In this exhibition, Kim presents three recent works in an online format: Media (Enjoy with People at Changdeok Palace) recreates the resonant cultural symbols embedded in Seoul's centuries-old Changdeok Palace as visual metaphors for digital media, Media (The Jeweled Palace of Tranquil Extinction) is a work of projection mapping featuring traditional hanji paper-style lighting inspired by the revered Tongdosa Temple located in Yangsan, Korea, and Beyond Time and Space is a digitally animated artwork which examines the historical gap between ethical ideology and human nature by combining motifs of traditional Korean letter painting folk art, particularly those celebrating the key values of filial piety and brotherly love, and the image of a Chinese Qing Dynasty snuff bottle.
Following the dramatic challenges and changes of the year 2020, the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. hopes that this new digital exhibition can provide viewers with moments of comfort, peace, and normalcy through an appreciation of traditional thought and the beauty of cultural heritage that respects life in harmony with nature.

About the Artist
HyeGyung Kim is a media artist, author, and design educator based in Korea. She received her MFA in Digital Media Design from Hongik University and her PhD in Visual & Multimedia Design from HanYang University in Korea. She is an adjunct faculty at Sungkyunkwan University, Sungshin Women's University, and Sejong University. Kim has participated in numerous exhibitions including the 2020 Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Media Art event and the 2017 Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Korea.
