Korean Cultural Centre India announces that regular Korean language classes will begin sequentially at 12 schools from 12th April with the start of the new semester in 2021 at schools in India. The 3 regular Korean language classes started at 3 schools in 2020 have been expanded to 15 classes at 12 schools this year. Particularly, it is noteworthy that three schools in Chennai adopted regular Korean language classes for the first time.
This is interpreted as a result of increasing interest in Korean language in the educational field in India due to the influence of the National Education policy in July, 2020 recommending Korean language as foreign language and the recent Korean culture fever spreading to mainstream of Indian society.
In order to repay the love for Korea, Korean Cultural Centre India actively has promoted Korean language dissemination project like holding the briefing session regarding Korean Language Regular class support for more than 80 secondary schools in regions where KCCI can support Korean language teacher from the beginning of this year. As a result, 27 MOUs have been signed for Korean language class support and cultural exchange between Korean Cultural Centre India and Indian schools this year, and 12 schools selected for regular Korean language class taking into account that the school's instructional conditions, the will of the principal, regional arrangements, and the support conditions for Korean language teachers. And the remaining 15 schools have been decided to hold Korean Language hobby classes using after-school program during the summer vacation and the second semester.
Hwang Il-yong, director of the Korean Cultural Centre India said, “Korean Language education in India is in the beginning stage. To support the rapidly growing demand for Korean Language education, we plan to cultivate local language teachers through opening Korean Language teacher training course. We have been working with Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) for the training course. We are working on excavating more schools which are interested in Korean Language class and supporting the schools, and promoting online joint classes with the schools starting Korean Language classes this year. As a major strategy, we are connecting Language Education with our cultural exchange programs, not only language program supports, we are providing various cultural exchange programs to the schools like Korean fork tale performance, quiz or essay All India contests, performing arts, etc.”
