As the 5th episode of the <2021 Virtual Artist Studio Visit> program, the Korean Cultural Centre is pleased to invite you to a multi-disciplinary artist JUNE PAK’s studio in Toronto.
JUNE PAK was born in Seoul, South Korea, and now lives in Toronto, Canada. Her practice-based research continues to question a different means to articulate visualization of ethnicity. Coming from her personal experience of living in Canada as Korean-Canadian, the hyphenated identity is a central theme in her practice. Her multi-disciplinary works (photo, video, sound, text, installation, performance and writing) have shown around nationally and internationally. She received numerous grants and awards from Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council for her projects, including the K.M. Hunter Artist Award (2004) and the Chalmers Arts Fellowship (2017). She teaches as a part-time lecturer at University of Toronto (Visual Studies program) and at OCAD University (Cross-Disciplinary Art and Integrated Media Programs).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, artists were removed from their familiar places to present their works when many exhibition spaces were forced to close with no clear idea on when to reopen. Visitors also lost opportunities to meet their favorite artists and be enlightened by their unique perspectives which can be a guiding light in this unprecedented time of isolation.
Considering that social distancing is still a necessary measure to overcome the COVID 19 pandemic, the KCC has prepared a series of virtual artist studio visits that can connect artists with their audiences safely from home. As the first season of the program, we invite prominent Korean-Canadian artists to show us how they spend their time at home and what kind of new works they are envisioning and visualizing. This program is planned to introduce a new episode on the last Thursday of each month.
