In celebration of the 2021 Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), the Korean Cultural Centre is pleased to open a Minhwa Coloring Class with a special guest instructor from Korea, Ms. Jung-A Kim.
Learn about Minhwa, Korean folk art and make your own piece of artwork. In this class, we will learn how to color a portion of the <Irworobongdo 일월오봉도>. ‘Ir’ stands for the ‘sun’, ‘Wor’ stands for the moon, ‘O’ is the korean word for ‘five’, and ‘Bong-do’ means ‘peak’. All together, its name is <Sun, Moon and Five Peaks>. The Sun and moon represent the King and Queen, creating a balance of yin and yang in the sky. The five peaks represent Korea’s five significant mountains.
As a painting that wishes for a peaceful reign and nation, it was always placed behind the King’s throne during the Joseon Dynasty. The painting was also buried with the King in the royal tomb. It is said that the artwork is only complete with the King sitting in front of the painting. In such challenging times due to COVID-19, we hope that this painting will bring peace to everyone.
