KCC’s Squid Game (Monday Nov 15)

The Korean Cultural Centre Canada (Director Sungeun Lee) hosted an offline event, “KCC’s Squid Game” on Monday, November 15th, 2021, introducing numerous children’s games featured in Netflix’s hit series, “Squid Game.” In compliance with COVID-19 regulations, 20 spots were open for registration, which filled within 30 minutes, exhibiting its immense popularity.

During the event, participants played various games such as, Ddakji-chigi, Mugunghwa kkoci pieot seumnida, Dalgona (honeycomb candy), Tug of War, and marble game. The event not only provided opportunities for physical participation in the games but a cultural learning experience via learning how to fold Ddakji, making Dalgona and learning about the Mugunghwa (Hibiscus syriacus), the national flower of South Korea.

Participants gave in their all during the games, moistening the needle tips to succeed sculpting their Dalgona, and even slipping on the floor from hitting the Ddakji too hard. During the game of Tug of war, participants brainstormed and planed out strategies, resulting in a team showing great teamwork by coordinating a rhythm through a chant. Paired into twos, participants also played a variety of games with marbles and stones, such as the old/even guess, aiming game and more.

The dress code for this event was ‘A Touch of Green’ to symbolize the green uniform from the original film and the KCC staff wore pink hoodies with black masks, resembling the game coordinators from the film. As the highlight of the game, ‘Younghee’, the Squid game doll, led the game of ‘Mugunghwa kkoci pieot seumnida’.

One of the participants shared her thoughts by expressing that “it was really great to experience and play Korean children’s games. Especially, playing Korean games here at the KCC with other participants with different cultural backgrounds was a definitely amazing experience!”
