The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles(Wijin Park, Director) and Korean traditional music(Gugak) artist, Seo-Yoon Jang present a special online project, English Gugak Series 'Korean Traditional Music 101: Sound of Korea' Ep 4. Geomungo on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 on the KCCLA Youtube channel.


The fourth episode is 'Geomungo' which is one of the oldest instruments of Korea. It originated in the kingdom of Goguryeo. There is a painting of the instrument in the Goguryeo chamber tomb which was drawn in the 4th century. The body of Geomungo is made of paulownia wood. Rounded front plate symbolizes the sky and the flat back plate of the instrument symbolizes the ground. Six strings are made of silk. Three strings are held by 16 wooden frets and rests are held by movable bridges called Anjok. Geomungo uses a bamboo stick to play and the left hand is placed on wooden frets. by pressing down, moving back and forth the player changes pitch and creates ornaments and vibrato.
