Wolves have signed Hwang Hee-chan on a permanent deal after triggering their option to buy him from RB Leipzig.

The South Korea forward, 26, arrived at Molineux on a season-long loan and he has impressed during his five months under Bruno Lage for his deal to be converted into a permanent transfer.

His deal will end hopes of Premier League rivals attempting to snatch him from under Wolves’ nose, with Tottenham and Liverpool monitoring his progress in his rookie season in England where he has scored four goals in his 10 starts.

Hwang suffered a hamstring injury which has kept him out for more than a month but Wolves have seen enough to move quickly to secure his signature this window. Sources in Germany say the deal is expected to be worth £12million.

After arriving at Leipzig from Salzburg, Hwang was comfortable in Bundesliga but wanted to test himself in the Premier League and within one season has been rewarded with a long-term deal at Wolves.

He has mainly started for Lage as a left-sided forward who arrives in the penalty area. There is hope he will continue a promising partnership with Raul Jimenez after the pair played together for nine games before injury struck, with Wolves getting positive results in seven of them.

Nicknamed “The Bull” from before he joined Wolves - coincidentally the same as club legend Steve Bull - he grew up watching South Korean players in the Premier League such as Park Ji-Sung and Seol Ki-hyeon, he revealed in an interview with Telegraph Sport in November.

By the time of that interview, Wolves had already plotted to turn Hwang’s loan into a permanent deal and have been able to complete the formalities during the current window. He is expected to return from injury next month.
