<Jeju Haenyeo>
The Jeju Haenyeo are professional underwater divers who do not rely on apparatus to harvest marine lives in Jeju Island. They realized that the sea is a Mother Nature to be tendered and preserved instead of being mass harvested.
Jeju Haenyeo’s unique cultural identity, community involvement in managing and handing down fishing practices and the promotion of environmental sustainability with its eco-friendly methods were so highly valued that its culture landed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in November 2016.
<Jeju, Volcanic Island>
Jeju is the largest and southernmost island isolated from the Korean peninsula. It has an area of 1,850.1 1㎢ and a population of 680,000 residents.
After Jeju was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2002, World Natural Heritage in 2007 and a Global Geopark in 2010, the Culture of Jeju Haenyeo was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, referred to Jeju as one of the world`s last islands of outstanding natural beauty.
