Offline Korean classes kickoff from April:
Indian school students will gain hands-on experience of the language starting next month
~ 2,342 students from 36 schools set to take offline Korean classes~
Korean Cultural Centre India has announced that they will be conducting offline Korean classes in Indian schools from April 2022. Korean language classes will be taken by 2,342 students from a total of 36 schools, particularly curriculum-based Korean language classes will be conducted in 23 schools.
In January 2022, Korean Cultural Center conducted a Korean Language education demand survey in 73 schools located in Delhi NCR, after which KCCI has planned to conduct curriculum-based Korean language classes and hobby classes with 36 Indian schools that have expressed their intention to conduct Korean classes.
Compared to the number of Indian schools conducting Korean language classes in Indian schools (1,536 in 26 schools) in 2021, there was a remarkable increase in the number. The number of schools grew to become about 140% and the number of students increased to become 153%, especially, the increase in schools teaching Korean as a curriculum-based courses (23 schools, 1,363) is noteworthy.
The increase in demand for Korean language classes in Indian schools can be acknowledged with the recent Hallyu (Korean Wave) craze about K-drama and K-pop among Indians, along with the Indian government's announcement of Korean as one of the recommended foreign languages in their new education policy updated in July 2020.
The Director of Korean Cultural Centre India, Mr. Hwang Il-Yong, said, “In 2020, the Korean government developed a Korean language curriculum for Indian secondary schools and through this curriculum, they made a specialised textbook which we plan to use for the 6th grade Indian school students who take Korean classes this year.” He also said, “We will do our best to develop more textbooks and through the Korean language teachers, we will work hard to develop the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the Korean language education among Indian schools."
