The special event began with a brief introductory lecture on Korean culture, including the Hangul writing system, and was followed by musical performances given by the Korean Traditional Music Institute of America. Under the theme of "Korean Tunes: Past meets Present", these musical performances provided a wonderful opportunity for members of the general public to enjoy the wide variety of musical styles found in Korean traditional music. From the cheerful and lively instrumental pieces found in Korean classical court songs, to the dynamic and harmonized styles found in the 'Sango' freestyle, these performances also introduced attendees to traditional Korean instruments such as the twelve-stringed zither-like instrument called Gayageum and two-stringed fiddle-like instrument called Haegeum.
