As Canada and the Republic of Korea mark their 60th year of diplomatic relations, let’s take a look at how cultural and educational exchanges have only strengthened the two countries bond.
For many years, the relationship between Korea and Canada has been characterized by mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to making the world a better place, and one of the most important ways these two countries have built and maintained this friendship is through cultural and educational exchange programs. These programs, whether they be university exchanges, internships, international job opportunities, or cultural immersion programs, allow Canadians and Koreans to learn and grow together, immerse themselves in different cultures, develop new perspectives, and broaden their horizons.
Korean international students account for around 3% of all international students in Canada. Many young Koreans are attracted to Canadian post-secondary institutions as they provide a world-class academic foundation in a safe and generally socially tolerant environment.

But many Canadians are finding themselves wanting to work and study in Korea too! According to the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, about 3,200 Canadians currently live and work in Korea as English teachers. This cultural and professional exchange not only allows Canadians to experience Korean cityscapes, food, language, and culture, but also allows them to provide a high-quality English education to Korean children and adults. On top of the vast number of jobs available to Canadians in Korea, many Canadian students are attracted to study abroad in Korea due to its high educational rankings, scholarships available for Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students, and the popularity and prevalence of Korean culture in Canadian society. Many scholarships are available for post-secondary international students at schools like Seoul National University (Scholarships can be found here), and Kyungpook National University (Scholarships can be found here).
In conclusion, by both countries continuing to promote education and exchange programs, Korea and Canada are continuing to form a strong and lasting friendship that will benefit both countries for generations to come. These programs help to foster a better understanding between the people of Korea and Canada, and create a strong network of future leaders who are committed to making a positive impact in the world.
