The Korean Cultural Center in Hungary launches its first series of lectures on cultural theory, which looks behind the increasingly popular Korean cultural phenomena in an accessible, critical and experiential way. Among the topics of the Korea Salon 1.5 will be Korean folk music, kpop, gender theory, and related to these areas, specific Korean concepts and cultural processes that we will try to understand with the help of invited experts. The Korea Salon takes place every two months, and the lectures are always accompanied by a light, social programme, such as a live concert after a music lecture. The initiative also aims to provide a community experience for those interested in Korean culture. Therefore, we encourage everyone to come and discuss Korean phenomena in good company with delicious drinks.
The first episode of the Korea Salon titled 'The Culture of Arirang' will take place in Magvető Café Budapest on 22 April at 5 p.m.
What is Arirang? The first speaker of the Korea Salon, Kim YeonGap, author of The Culture of Arirang, says that arirang is "not simple", "not a folk song", but an independent genre and a culture that carries the spirit of resistance, unity and coexistence. The author of The Culture of Arirang, an indispensable book on the subject, does not offer a solution to the definition of arirang, but rather raises questions of interpretation for Koreans and foreigners by presenting different historical perspectives and ethnographic curiosities.
After the lecture, B.O.B. (민요밴드 비오비 bob), a group that combines Korean folk music (minyo) with modern elements, will take the stage from 7 pm.
The program is free of charge, but due to the limited number of seats, pre-registration is required.
