The Korean Cultural Center Sweden has opened a Korean picture book illustrations exhibition, 'Beyond the Pages', from April 7.
This exhibition highlights illustrations in the works of Korea's leading picture book artists. Beyond text stories, the drawings and animations enchant visitors with a deeper and broader world of stories.
LIU Jaesoo & SHEEN Dongil, Yellow Umbrella (노란우산)
In the rain, a yellow umbrella floats over the path. Blue, red, green and purple umbrellas also float. They glide across the intersection and the playground. They look like colorful flowers. Each umbrella has a secret below, and stories between the umbrellas exist.
This book only has pictures, so the readers have space for their imagination. This book also comes with a CD containing 13 pieces of music, gentle and cheerful or melodic and sweet. The music reflects each scene from the book.
LEE Hyeri & HONG Insun, Caterpillar House (우리 집에는 괴물이 우글우글)
Put yourself in the shoes of a caterpillar. You crawl instead of walk. Everything around you looks gigantic, blown way out of proportion. Yes, in the eyes of a little boy turned into a caterpillar - a metaphor for a child's growing self.
If you were a caterpillar, a day in a house becomes quite an adventure. When the night comes, you head to your charming leafy bed and happily anticipate the beginning of yet another day filled with adventure.
BAEK Heena, The Bath Fairy (장수탕 선녀님), Magic Candies (알사탕)
There is an old bathhouse in our neighborhood. Although there is a game room and the cooling room at the newly opened Spa Land, my mother still goes to the old bathhouse. One day, a strange granny suddenly shows up in the cold bathtub! This granny says she is the fairy who lost her heavenly robe long ago. The Bath Fairy tells a heartwarming and laughter-filled fantasy about a fairy grandmother in an old bathhouse.
In Magic Candies, Dong-Dong plays the marbles alone while waiting for others to talk with him. However, no one is interested in marble, Dong-Dong. Tired of playing alone, Dong-Dong goes to the toy store to buy a new set of marbles and buys a bag of colourful candies. Surprisingly, he starts to hear sounds whenever he tries these colourful candies.
Now there is only one clear candy left. What story will this candy tell Dong-Dong?
JOUNG Yumi, Dust Kid, Jon-Jae-Ui Jib (존재의 집)
In bed, late on a sleepless night in winter, Eujin finds a small dust kid.
Then, she decides to do the cleaning she has been putting off for so long. Cleaning every corner of her room, she keeps finding other dusty kids here and there and starts clearing them up one by one. Just when she thinks she has cleaned her room and the dust kids are all gone now, she faces another one.
There it stands, the house, drawn in pencil. It begins to fall apart. Bricks come loose from the wall, the front door falls off its hinges and walls break away. Everything sinks into endless nothingness. A view of the rooms is exposed. Furniture shatters, objects fall to the floor and the roof slides off. Melancholia and the possibility of leaving are all that remain.
