The Korean Cultural Center in Hungary will present K-Movie Section at the 19th Cinefest Miskolc International Film Festival between 1 and 9 September, 2023.

In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Korean Academy of Film Arts, an institution pivotal to the advancement of Korean cinema, a special Korean film program will be composed of 3 short and 3 feature films by Korean master directors, Jang Joon-hwan (장준환), Kim Soyoung (김소영) and Hur Jin-ho (허진호) between 2 and 5 September.  In the program, three graduation works will be screened that have garnered significant acclaim at overseas film festivals, along with the debut and outstanding works of the artists. The selected films encompass experimental pieces delving into the contradictions prevalent in Korean society, as well as films that explore imaginative genres, all of them have captured public attention. 

In the 2003 science fiction film Save the Green Planet, aliens plan to invade the Earth and are already here disguised as politicians and businessmen. At least, according to a young man who, as the world’s self-appointed savior, goes into action: he kidnaps the leaders to get them to confess. The story of the documentary Sound of Nomad: Korjo Arirang, dates back to 1937, when Stalin deported nearly 200,000 Koreans from the Russian Far East to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Among them was the troupe of the Koryo Theatre in Vladivostok, who decided to save and preserve their culture in their new homeland. Christmas in August is the heartbreaking story of a photographer in his thirties who meets a charming young woman. When he learns that he’s terminally ill, he closes his business and leaves her life without a trace to spare her the pain of grief.

A selection of Korean short movies will also be presented to the audience of the Festival. Those who are interested can meet Director Kim Soyoung personally at a Q & A event on 2 September. The Director will join the Festival as the jury member of the feature film category of the Competition program.
